Bisbee Tournaments Adapt as Hurricane Recovery Begins

October 22, 2023, Cabo San Lucas, BCS…
On the eve of day one of Bisbee’s two famous offshore fishing tournaments, Cabo gets slammed by Hurricane Norma.

The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament has to Adapt and Overcome what Mother Nature has thrown at Bisbee organizers and its world-class participants.

Before getting into the very interesting news below, the Bisbee’s Offshore Tournament group wishes all the fishermen and communities of Southern Baja the very best as they recover from the terrible hurricane these past few days. Their thoughts, hopes, and prayers are for everyone affected!

What this means to the tournament world …

Most anglers came to Cabo for two Bisbee’s tournaments, both with multimillion-dollar payouts, and one being renowned as the undisputed richest event in the world, with last year’s awards being $11.7 Million alone! With the port being closed on the first tournament’s scheduled fishing days due to the arrival of Hurricane Norma and everyone involved being steadfast in wanting two tournaments in which to participate, the Bisbee’s organizers came up with a new, quite creative way (many would say) to fulfill these wishes.

Rather than outright canceling the Los Cabos Offshore Tournament (LCO), anglers can still participate in it at the same time as the Black & Blue Tournament (B&B). Yes, anglers may participate in either one or both tournaments simultaneously because the events will occur on the same two fishing days. B&B and LCO tournament schedules will be as follows: The tournament(s) will be a two-day fishing event(s), with registration on Wednesday, October 25, and fishing on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 26 and 27. The awards banquet will remain on Saturday night, where the awards for both tournaments will be presented.
The entry fee structure for the Black & Blue will stay the same; however, the prize money will be divided between two days instead of three. In response to those who prefer that the Black and Blue was the three-day tournament, the Bisbee’s agree. “Trust us; we also wanted the three-day event. Unfortunately, several government entities are also making decisions, and with the information available, our best and safest option was to push the schedule back one day. With many of the anglers having to deal with charter boats, hotel rooms, and airline availability, going beyond our schedule was impossible. As mentioned above, the event schedule provides the opportunity to combine the two tournaments and win much more money.”
At 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, we will have the Captain’s and Angler’s Meeting on the same stage as the past several years, right next to the weigh station at the Puerto Paraiso Mall. This one meeting will be for BOTH tournaments.
Fishing hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
Saturday’s awards banquet for both tournaments will be on the ASIPONA Cruise Ship Pier at 6:00 p.m.
One last thing: Bisbee’s are again having their annual online auction and raffle. There are lots of fantastic items. You can check it out here: Bisbee’s Fish & Wildlife Conservation Fund’s Silent Auction. Proceeds will benefit The Green Scholarship Program, which provides underprivileged Los Cabos students with college scholarship opportunities, Bisbee’s revolutionary new RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Tagging Program and our Nkwe Tactical Training Academy wildlife anti-poaching program in South Africa.
Also, Team Baja Vida will be broadcasting the entire event live from AIR, LAND AND SEA. Stand by for more information on this extraordinary new development.
Because of last-minute adjustments beyond their control, some teams could not rearrange their schedules to fit the new revised one. The Zorah Story

Felipe Valdez and the Boys

At 2:53 p.m. on Day One, the radio crackled to life. Felipe Valdez on Team Zorah reported they had hooked a huge Billfish and their location was approximately 40 miles south.

Their battle continued throughout the afternoon, with the Weigh Station receiving periodic updates until the "lines out" was called at 7:00 p.m. Soon after, the Team called in that they had the giant fish alongside and were attempting to get it into the boat.

However, it was not to be…
